The startling, intense images produced by Francis Bacon provoked many reactions during his lifetime. These ranged from simplistic psychological approaches to appreciation of his manipulation of pigment, which Bacon always put down to intuition and luck, but critic David Sylvester believed to have links to the 'country house' portraits of England's past.
Enjoy this engaging and far-reaching conversation between two giants of art and literature, Scottish artist Peter Doig and Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgård about the legendary Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944). About how they mirror themselves in Munch’s struggle to stay alert as an artist and keep discovering new territories instead of giving in to the expectations of others. “I’m still shaking after walking around in the exhibition,” Doig says of Knausgård’s ‘Edvard Munch’ exhibition in connection to which the writer and painter talk about their fascination with the Norwegian painter. Knausgård feels that Doig’s paintings are similar to Munch’s, and Doig describes the ways in which there are references to Munch in his paintings – e.g. how both painters hide things in their work.

Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1904, Willem de Kooning stowed away to the U.S. in 1926 and settled in New York City. While working in the commercial realm, de Kooning also was developing his artistic style, exploring both figure painting and more abstract subjects through the 1930s. By the 1940s, those two main tendencies seemed to fuse perfectly, notably in Pink Angels. De Kooning became known for his depiction of women, and women would dominate his paintings for decades. Later in life, de Kooning explored landscapes and even sculpture, before Alzheimer's disease made it impossible to continue on. He died in 1997 at age 92.

Film by Eric Minh Swenson. ROBERT BERMAN GALLERY is pleased to present Abrasive Affirmations, featuring new paintings by Dennis Mukai. Diligently created, Mukai’s paintings are a unique process all his own. Often confused as photographs, Mukai’s paintings are a reductive process of sanding down a smoothly painted panel of masonite in order to utilize the mid-tones to develop the resulting image. The work is then finely finished with a varnish, leaving no trace of where the masonite begins and the varnish ends.

A new Film by Eric Minh Swenson Mark Pomilio’s semi-translucent, overlapping, often-symmetrical shapes immediately scream “structure,” and that’s exactly the point. Through simple geometric equations that yield “parent” geometric forms, and a systematic multiplying and folding of those forms, Pomilio creates work that commands your attention as it walks the line between organic forms and human intervention. He pushes this line further with a recurring form; the contour of a house, which evokes the profound changes the family nucleus will undergo as new discoveries in life sciences (like cloning) knit their way into the mainstream.Pomilio currently teaches painting and drawing at Arizona State University. He has exhibited his work extensively across the United States and abroad. His work is included in private collections, as well as the permanent collections of Baylor University, Martin Museum of Art, Waco, TX; Dupont Corporation, Wilmington, DE; University of Arizona, Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.

Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement characterised by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. Impressionism originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s.

British artist Maggi Hambling is best known for her intimate portraits, paintings of the sea and controversial public sculptures. For being something of a non-conformist, she refuses to be pigeonholed. After half a century of challenging the art world, Maggi Hambling has a new exhibition at the British Museum. Entitled "Touch," the exhibition features 40 works, many of which have never been seen in public before. Primarily on paper and ranging from early pieces right through to some of her most recent works, the show reveals how drawing is at the heart of her artistic practice.

Documentary about the life of painter Antoni Tapies
Francis Bacon was the loudest, rudest, drunkest, most sought-after British artist of the 20th century. Twenty-five years after his death, his canvases regularly exceed £40million at auction. Bacon's appeal is rooted in his notoriety - a candid image he presented of himself as Roaring Boy, Lord of Misrule and Conveyor of Artistic Violence. This was true enough, but only part of the truth. He carefully cultivated the facade, protecting the complex and haunted man behind the myth. In this unique, compelling film, those who knew him speak freely, some for the first time, to reveal the many mysteries of Francis Bacon.

Rudy Ernst: Action Painting at the QCC Art Gallery of April 21, 2009 Life is too short to worry about Wall Street's financial derivatives in the amount of "Four hundred eighty-five trillion seven hundred forty-eight billion two hundred ninety-six million four hundred seventy-eight thousand three hundred twenty-eight dollars and seventy-eight cents." Rudy Ernst has declared himself a happy Dadaist-Philosopher who paints and writes rather from the guts than from the brain. This film shows highlights of how the artist is painting a 110-foot canvas in less than forty minutes, being driven entirely by the spur of the moment. Ernst (who carries a Ph.D. in economics) finally adds the absurd (but real) above-mentioned dollar amount to show how dadaesque (nonsensical) our economy has become.

A unique historical document one one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Omnibus - Salvador Dali
His work is defined as organic and neuronal. His technique is executed from a very physical form, carried away by the demands generated by the own canvas, seeking thus to cause the observer a hypnotic effect. Is the observer who has of judging or imagine that suggests his painting. But mostly Lluís Garriga tries with his paintings what not to leave anyone indifferent and convey emotions.
